 Workshop "Stabilisation of Iron Gall Ink Containing Paper"

Stabilisation of Iron Gall Ink Containing Paper workshop will be organised on November 19th and 20th 2004 as part of the event "Durability of paper and writing".

The workshop is a mid-career course for expirienced conservators. It will consist of lectures as well as practical demonstrations, presented by partners of InkCor project.

Lectures will focus on all aspects of iron gall ink corrosion, with special empahsis on instrumental techniques for analysis of iron gall ink components, factors affecting corrosivity of the inks, historical iron gall ink and paper manufacture, etc.

Some of the achievements, presented during practical demonstrations will be: 

- Art Technological Sources database, containing iron gall ink recipes from historical sources 

-  Ink corrosion database, containing visual assessment of numerous historical artefacts. It will aid conservators in description and documentation of the documents

- Simple identification tests for iron and copper, which  will enable conservators to identify the corrosive inks

- Determination of pH of iron gall ink containing paper

- Aqueous and non-aqueous methods for stabilisation of iron gall ink containing paper. Phytate treatment as well as alternative ones will be presented.

During the practical demonstration, only a limited number of participants is foreseen (20).
